Taylor was born in San Jose, California and grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. To complete her West Coast migration, she studied at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington; where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in English & Spanish. She has studied abroad in Majadahonda, Spain and Valaparaíso, Chile and wrote her thesis on the Chilean female perspective and their changing economic, societal, and cultural role in Valparaíso. Currently Taylor can be found enjoying an IPA, reading, running, planning her next excursion, or trying to do too much.
What ignited your passion for empowering women worldwide?
Taylor: My favorite author is Toni Morrison and I believe I owe her the credit for igniting in me a passion for the empowerment of women worldwide, but also for exemplifying the complex and diverse role a woman plays. This complexity was the driving force behind my thesis on the structural changes occurring for the women’s role in Chile. It was through researching Michelle Bachelet (first and only female Chilean president) and spending hours interviewing Chilean women that I realized how important the empowerment of women was to the stability and growth of a country, both socially and economically. Women are meant to be heard!
What’s one of your favorite places you’ve traveled and why?
Taylor: Oh tough question! I am not so sure I have a favorite place so much as a favorite memory of a certain place. One of those is Florence with my mother and sister. There was a gigantic rainstorm and everyone had to leave the streets. Afterwards my sister and I walked out and stumbled onto this plaza just as it was getting dark. All the cobblestones were shining from the recent rainstorm. There was an incredible band led by a great pianist, playing across the courtyard. Beautiful moment. I understand why so many fall in love with and in Florence.
Where would you like to visit next and why?
Taylor: I would love to re-visit South America. Uruguay was incredible and I have yet to hike Machu Pichu (on my bucket list), see the salt flats in Córdoba Argentina or the famous beaches of Brazil. Recently however, I have also been reading a lot of Junot Diaz and Julia Alverez and the Dominican Republic is starting to call… the list really goes on and on.
As an agent for positive change, what is one of your dreams for the future?
Taylor: While I am passionate about the empowerment of women, my deeper dream is to help all who feel powerless to realize their own strength and resilience, to advocate for themselves and follow their passions—whatever those may be.
